What Is “Gentrification”?

Gentrification is the process by which a wealthier class of individuals begins to move into poor or working-class communities, often originally occupied by people of color.

Who Is Affected?

Low-income and working class residents and largely communities of color.

Travel + Gentrification

Travel and tourism is often an economic driving factor towards gentrification. Real estate in “up-and-coming” locations will often get converted into Airbnbs and short-term rentals, which can drive up the cost of living for locals in the area. Attempts to make areas more “trendy” or enticing for travelers can sometimes result in those places becoming less habitable for actual residents. This specific phenomenon is often referred to as “tourism gentrification.”
