What is “Overtourism”?

Overtourism is when certain places of interest are visited by excessive numbers of tourists, causing negative and/or undesirable effects for the places visited and the local populations.

Who Is Affected?

Local populations and communities native to the area (often lower income), as well as the environment and ecosystems.

Travel + Overtourism

Overtourism is an issue many places around the world have been grappling with for decades. High amounts of foot traffic, increases in waste and littering, and sociopolitical challenges for locals are all symptoms of this phenomenon that endangers many well-loved and irreplaceable landmarks around the world. Conversely, a lot of the local economies rely on the tourist industry in a way that makes combating overtourism immensely difficult.
